Description

Product Overview

Spirax Sarco IN40M steam injector uses steam to raise the temperature of water or other liquids in a tank. It works by using a jet of steam to draw in the liquid through radial ports, mix it, and distribute the heated liquid throughout the tank or vessel, ensuring thorough mixing and avoiding temperature stratification.

Key Features

  • All stainless steel construction (Austenitic stainless steel ASTM A351 CF3M).
  • Heats, mixes, and circulates with no moving parts.
  • Compact design minimizes noise and vibration.
  • Available with 1½” BSPT male, 1½” NPT male, or 1½” Butt-weld (Schedule 80) connections.
  • Ideal for boiler feedwater heating and deaeration.

Safety Information, Installation and Maintenance

Detailed installation and maintenance instructions are supplied with the product. The information below does not contain sufficient installation safety information. For safety information, see IM-GCM-10.

Installation

The IN40M is supplied in male thread (BSPT or NPT) or butt-weld form. It may be fitted to a tank wall connection or to pipework in the tank. It may be necessary to fit a reinforcing plate to the tank wall. Do not use a wrench on the round body of the injector; ribs on the injector body allow a spanner to be used for fitting. Steam piping must be properly supported to prevent vibration and stress on the tank wall. Use of a suitable adhesive on threaded connections is recommended.

Pipeline Sizing

Use 40 mm pipe for a single IN40M injector. For multiple injector installations, use 65 mm pipe for two IN40M injectors, and 80 mm pipe for three IN40M injectors.

Position the injector horizontally at a low level, on the vertical centre line of the tank (for single injectors), a minimum of 150 mm from the side of the tank, and at one end of the tank. The distance between the injector and the end of the tank must be as great as possible for quietest operation. The following minimum dimensions apply for the IN40M:

  • 0.5 to 7.0 bar g: 500 mm
  • 7.1 to 10.0 bar g: 750 mm
  • 10.1 to 14.0 bar g: 1000 mm
  • 14.1 to 17.0 bar g: 1250 mm

A minimum depth of water of 200 mm must be allowed below the IN40M injector.

Multiple Injectors

Position the injectors equally across the width of the tank to ensure adequate mixing and maximum circulation. Leave at least 150 mm between the injectors and the tank side, and at least 300 mm between injectors.

Systems

All system parts should be fitted in a horizontal pipeline situated above the top of the tank. It is recommended to fit a stop valve and a Y-type strainer upstream of the control valve. Install the strainer on its side to prevent a water pocket forming. Install the sensor and sensor pocket approximately one third of the way up the tank, ideally above, or above and to one side of, the injector(s).

Capacity

The choice of steam injector depends on the flowrate of steam required to heat the liquid. The table below shows the IN40M saturated steam capacity in kg/h when heating tanks are vented to atmosphere and are up to 3 metres deep. Control valve selection also affects steam flow rate. Values not shown in the table can be calculated by linear interpolation. For specific applications, contact Spirax Sarco engineers.

Note: Steam pressure is greatly reduced inside the injector. Therefore, an undersized control valve, or an injector that is too large, can result in poor injection and mixing.

For higher capacities, use two or more injectors in parallel.

Maintenance and Fault Finding

No specific maintenance is required. An annual inspection of the injector and the steam supply pipework is recommended. Check that the injector discharge holes are not obstructed and that any screw threads are tight. Excessive noise or vibration in service could be caused by an injector becoming loose, blocked outlet nozzles, or if the tank temperature exceeds 90 °C (as the steam will not condense fully).
